The President enjoying a cup of tea in Lacuna
Hello! Welcome to the beginning of an exciting new year at the QM. I’m Kirsty and this year I’ll be giving you all the chat from my lovely Presidential desk on the third floor. I’ll be keeping you up to date with what’s going on with the Board of Management and how our events and committees are getting on. This issue I’m going to let you know how you can get involved.

The QM holds four committees open to all members of the union. They are headed up by four fine convenors; each responsible for different parts of the union. At this time of year you might be thinking about getting involved in something other than just the usual lectures, lab and seminars. Here at the QM, the committees are a perfect way to do that. As well as meeting a whole load of new people, the skills you learn in each committee will help you stand out from the crowd when you finally make it to the world of real work. Below is a run down of each committee, so have a wee read and see if anything takes your fancy

On Mondays our Campaigns and Charities committee meets. Headed by the indomitable Ellie Munro, they are responsible for raising awareness of sexual health issues through our free condom scheme, campaigning for a variety of issues such as Fair Trade and raising money for the QM’s charity of the semester. You can get involved by suggesting who the QM should raise money for this year by coming along to the committee at 5pm in the Board Room. They are always on the lookout for new fundraising and campaigning ideas. To find out more email campaigns@qmu.org.uk.

On Tuesday our Events committee meets with the convenor Lauren Clarke. These are the people who get involved with the running of Cheesy Pop and Quids, as well as all the other big events throughout the year like 12 Hour Cheesy. You’ll often catch them excitably handing out flyers on Gilmorehill or setting up the new look Quids – which if you haven’t seen yet you should certainly check out – and are currently planning Halloween, which is set to be one of the highlights of the semester. The events committee is a lot of hard work, but it’s great fun! It’s where I started when I first got involved in the QM. If you want to be a part of this committee you can pick up an application form from reception, or attend one of their open meetings. To find out more email events@qmu.org.uk

On Wednesday the committee who produce this fine, award-winning publication meet. The Publications committee is convened by Nina Ballantyne who oversees the features, reviews and articles that make up qmunicate. Publications is a great way to get involved in journalism. Whether you have zero or tons of experience everyone is welcome to come along and contribute. qmunicate is, in my humble opinion, the best publication on campus. The Herald Press Awards certainly think so, with qmunicate winning the best student magazine in Scotland twice in the past five years. If you want to find out anymore about getting involved then email publications@qmu.org.uk

Thursday is our last committee of the week. Chaired by Pad Hughes the social committee are the brains behind all of the events run in Jim’s Bar. From Unplugged on Monday to Karaoke at Cheesy Pop the guys and gals of Social keep them running smoothly and make sure you are all having a bangin’ good time in the union. So if you love the Big Wednesday Night Pub Quiz and have a great idea for a new rollover game, or if you fancy coming along to help organize some New Comedy in Jim’s and get some contacts in the comedy world then social is for you. If you want to find out more email social@qmu.org.uk

Remember you must be a member of the QM to attend the committees so if you’re not a member you can sign up in the cloakroom during the day. As a member you are entitled to loads of benefits, including our new discount scheme, full of exclusive offers all over Glasgow.

Hope to see you along in the QM soon. My office is on the third floor nestled between the laundry room and the girls toilets. It’s a glamorous life. So feel free to visit me with any questions or queries you may have. And if I’ve persuaded you, there’s a timetable of all QM Events on the back page. See you all soon!
