Radio 1 Academy in the QMU: Schedule of Events + Ticket Info

From Saturday 10th May to Friday 16th May, the Queen Margaret Union is set to play host to the Radio 1 Academy.

The Academy is a week of workshops, events, and Q&As designed to inspire young people from Glasgow and across Scotland with guests already announced set to include Biffy Clyro, Richard Branson and Emeli Sande. On top of that a whole host of Radio 1 DJ’s including Fearne Cotton, Dan & Phil, Edith Bowman and the wonderful Scott Mills will be broadcasting out of the building all week.

For the union this is probably the biggest music event since Nirvana played the QMU in the early nineties (and you all probably know how much we like to talk about that!) but there’s a whole host more on offer than just great music.

From fashion, video games and television production to smartphone journalism and radio production, there are over 75 sessions on offer, and more than 7000 students and young people are set to pass through the doors of the QMU.

The sessions are all free and designed to engage with 16-24 years olds. Young people living locally to Glasgow, from Scotland and the rest of the UK can apply to attend all remaining sessions and workshops from today, Monday 5th May.

Queen Margaret Union President Calum MacInnes said “I am absolutely delighted that QMU will be playing host to BBC Radio 1’s Academy and participants of such stature as Emeli Sande and Sir Richard Branson. More importantly though, I’m ecstatic that we’re playing a part in helping the BBC to inspire thousands of young people, including hopefully a number of our own students.”

Though ticket requests for Biffy Clyro, Emeli Sande and Sir Richard Branson are now closed there is a whole host of activities still to be snapped up. Here’s a brief rundown of some of the most eye-catching events:

Saturday 10th May

Opening the Academy will be songwriting and comedy workshops with some very special guests. Unfortunately qmunicate can’t reveal the names just yet and getting a baby grand piano into Jim’s Bar has sadly proved impossible but it’s sure to be a great event. Later in the day there will be DJ workshops with Radio 1’s Danny Howard and a panel on how to get a job in television with My Mad Fat Diary’s Sharon Rooney.

Sunday 11th May

Sunday will see workshops on everything from poster design to presenting with Radio 1’s Dan & Phil. In Qudos there will be live performances from peroxide popstar Nina Nesbitt plus the chance of an appearance from another of Glasgow’s favourite musical trios…

Monday 12th May

Normally you’d hate Monday’s but with a workshop on word-smithery with two of Scotland’s finest MC’s (Solareye from Edinburgh’s Stanley Odd and the recently viral MC Loki) and a second blast of comedy from another of our special guests there’s plenty of reasons to throw yourself into the week. Later on the focus shifts to the future of journalism as experts from across the BBC offer tips on how to get a million Twitter followers and make stories direct from your mobile (qmunicate will be down the front for this one). To top it all off both the big dog of business, Sir Richard Branson and popstar Rita Ora will be taking questions (presumably not at the same time).

Tuesday 13th May

Fearne Cotton brings us the legendary Live Lounge and there’s a chance to question both the Radio 1 DJ lineup and TOWIE’s Sam and Billie before Edith Bowman hosts a silent disco. Elsewhere in the building there’s opportunities to grab hints and tips on everything from producing documentaries to picking the tunes for your own radio show as well as a music masterclass featuring Eilidh McKellar and Scottish Album of the Year winner RM Hubbert.

Wednesday 14th May

Mid-week Scott Mills brings more comedy and the director and cast of Waterloo Road take over Qudos for some small screen glamour, while workshops on sports journalism and the “Future of Interactive Fashion and Design” demonstrate that there really is something for everyone. Oh and we’ve also got a night of bands hosted by BBC Introducing’s Ally McCrae including Holy Esque and Capital Love.

Thursday 15th May

Thursday sees Greg James and his team taking questions, before Greg gets back behind the microphone to grill Biffy Clyro with a little help from the audience. Ally McCrae will be hosting another night of live music with hotly tipped rockers Copper Lungs whilst producer extraordinaire Hudson Mohawke goes from manning the decks for Kanye to teaching the art of the remix up on the QMU third floor.

Friday 16th May

Finally as Friday finally rolls around, we’ve got an overload of cracking stuff: Alice Levine leading a panel called Queens of the Airwaves, Charly Sloth with his friend Tinchy Stryder and the creators of Minecraft as well as workshops on vlogging, comedy and DJ skills. Phew, it’s gonna be a hell of a week.

Pretty good stuff huh? And this is only a fraction of what’s on offer.

Tickets are now available online for all of the Q&A sessions and Introducing shows, full details of which can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p017f6dt/profiles/book-a-place and the full schedule can be found at downloads.bbc.co.uk/radio1/academy/academy2014programme.pdf
