It’s September and Freshers’ Week is just around the corner now – exciting stuff! Cool events, a chance to make new pals, and a buzzing campus to get you all in the mood for the year ahead.
What the QMU Campaigns and Charities Committee (C&C for short) are most excited about however is the huge explosion of fundraising and campaigning activity within our union. Late last term, QMU members nominated a range of charities that they wanted us to raise money for during the week and the Freshers’ Helpers got together and voted for Charlotte Talwar’s nomination, Glasgow Women’s Aid. It is an amazing cause and they work to help women, children, and young people suffering from domestic abuse by providing information, support, and refuge accommodation.
Throughout the week you’ll spot our Freshers’ Helpers selling cakes by day (Monday outside of the QMU) and glow sticks, bubble blowing pots, and face paints by night. All of the money you donate will go towards this fabulous charity and will make a huge difference. You can also donate directly to our JustGiving page – https://www.justgiving.com/QMUFW15. Last year we raised £1,904 for our charity of Freshers’ Week 2014 (The Charlie Waller Memorial Trust) and hope to beat that and raise £2,000 this year!
It’s not all just charity work that we do though so look out for our very own campaigns throughout the week! We’ve been working hard on a ‘Get Home Safe’ campaign and have plastered the QMU with various top tips and useful contact numbers to help you keep safe after each night out. The C&C Committee also run one of the largest free condom distribution services in Glasgow and you’ll see our Fresher Helpers dressed in red and re-launching this service for the academic term throughout the best week of your University career.
If you’d like to get involved with the QMU Campaigns and Charities Committee, it runs every Monday at 5pm in the QMU boardroom on the third floor. You can also contact me, Lucy, at firstname.lastname@example.org for any further information! Have the best week ever and we hope to see you soon!
