The Sacrificial Poetry Review: 10 Performances That Will Make You Rethink Poetry

SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW POETRY?
Not like this you don’t.

For this week’s column I will begin to make good on my promise from last time, to find a poem or poet for everyone. Attempt Number 1 will take the form of that, the pinnacle of all great journalism, the top ten, click-bait “article”.

The premise for this list is less of a run down, more of a broad strokes overview of the top-tier performances (according to this particular poetry fan) of classic poetic themes. Ten of the most clichéd subjects, ten of the best poems and performances. To state the obvious, nothing is clear-cut. Not in your life, and not in poetry. Every one of these poems could fit in to if not one, then all of these categories. But each of the poems below demonstrate the best of the best of engaging and interesting looks at well-worn subject matter.

So, when you hear “poetry”, you might think you know what to expect, but you were not expecting this!

COMEDY: Kevin McLean/Doug Garry – BIG LOVE/NERD LOVE

IDENTITY: Cam Awkward-Rich – AFROPUNK

POLITICS: Joe with the glasses – REVOLUTION

WACKY: Wonder Dave – NERD SEX

LOVE: Sarah Kay/Phil Kaye – AN ORIGIN STORY

TRAGEDY: Kevin McLean – EVELYN

ROMANCE: Joy Young – THE DRESS POEM

MENTAL HEALTH: Andrea Gibson – THE MADNESS VASE

HOME: Carly Brown – TEXAS, I CAN’T BRING YOU TO PARTIES ANYMORE

POETRY: Agnes Török – ART FOR ART’S SAKE

And if you want to have a nice little poetry binge, feel free to check our new feature – The Sacrificial Poetry Review Playlist! You can find this week’s playlist here.
