Album Review: sir Was – Says Hi

The City Slang label’s growing roster of engaging electronica (think Caribou, Gold Panda) continues with the signing of sir Was, the moniker of Swedish multi-instrumentalist Joel Wästberg. The Says Hi EP is his debut release and draws on a wide range of influences including a rural sax-playing childhood and time spent studying jazz in South Africa.

The influence of diverse artists including Thomas Mapfumo, the Beatles and My Bloody Valentine shows in the single A Minor Life where a bagpipe intro streams into dreamy beats that recall a lazy childhood in the sun. Falcon channels a Tame Impala vibe with hip-hip vocals and like much of Says Hi, ends up somewhere altogether more original. It’s a tribute to Wästberg’s composing skills that the range of influences on Says Hi blend into a unique sound that defies easy classification. But whatever you wish to call it, you won’t find a finer accompaniment to a wind-down summer than this.
