Imagine being in a room filled with people where the joy is infectious. You are in a permanent state of giddy excitement, laughing and hugging and feeling like you will all never run out of conversation.
That is what last year’s Sherlock convention in London was like for me.
It was the first convention I had ever attended, and at first I did not know what to expect. Would I be more focussed on getting autographs, or meeting the cast and crew, or buying merchandise, or gazing at all the props on display?
And yes, while all of the above were still amazing experiences, they were far from being the highlight of my weekend. What really mattered, what always will matter, is being able to meet other like-minded fans.
I’ve realised that conventions are really where the most special of opportunities take place. It’s a place where people from all over the world can meet; people who may never have crossed paths without the convention in the first place. It’s a place where cherished memories are formed: chatting with people like you’re the oldest and closest of friends, when in reality, you’ve only met an hour ago; having intense conversations about theories and speculations, and neither party ever getting bored; everyone sharing their enthusiasm and passion without feeling self-conscious.
At times, you can almost forget about the convention itself. Yes, I still am extraordinary thankful and grateful to have met some amazing actors and writers associated with Sherlock, but the first thing that comes to mind is how my convention experience was a celebration of friendships formed out of a shared love for something. To quote Jacky, one of the many wonderful people I had the pleasure to meet at the convention, meeting fellow fans “is just like family.”
If anyone is on the fence about whether or not to attend a particular convention, I would urge you to just go for it! It really is a unique experience. You have the chance to meet people who you really click with, to talk at length about something you really are passionate about.
To all the people I met at the Sherlocked convention, thank you for a truly incredible weekend. Until the next time- the game is on!
