Big Night In at the QMU

Not a party person? More of an early bird than a night owl? Then Freshers’ Week may seem pretty daunting. Fortunately, there are loads of events going on during the day throughout the week at the QMU for everyone to enjoy! Here is qmunicate’s guide to some of the highlights of the events with a more chilled out vibe.

To kick off the week on Monday, Glasgow University Simpson’s Society are hosting an all-day screening of The Simpsons! Enjoy back-to-back episodes from the show’s best seasons on comfy sofas in Champs Bar. Later on in the day, you can head to the Really Useful Quiz, happening from 2pm-4pm in Jim’s Bar. This pretty much does what it says on the tin – it’s a quiz where you can win useful things! Prizes this year include copious amounts of loo roll, pasta, a toaster, and tea.

Fancy writing for qmunicate? Why not have a wander round the QMU fayre on Tuesday! Members of the Board of Management, alongside representatives from qmunicate and the QMU’s three other committees – Campaigns & Charities, Events and Social – will be there from 11am to 4pm to tell you all about the union and how to get more involved! If you fancy showing off your musical skills, there’s an Open Mic from 2pm til 5pm in Jim’s Bar, hosted by QMU favourites Flying Penguins! Or, if you’re more into gaming, there will be a Nintendo-themed Games Tournament in Champs Bar from 4pm til 7pm, where you can ruin your new friendships by getting overly competitive playing Mario Kart!

On Wednesday, find all the West End’s best charity shops at the big Charity Shop Fair from 11am to 3:30pm in QUDOS! There’ll be everything from vintage vinyl to designer brands, as well as possible volunteering opportunities. Or, if you’re interested in learning a new language, or even just fancy practising before courses start, why not check out the Language Café? Grab some lunch in Food Factory between 12pm and 2pm and have a chat!

Thursday sees ALOUD host their infamous spoken word open mic night, so if you’re into poetry then head along to Jim’s Bar from 2pm til 5pm – you can show off your own poetry skills, or simply just enjoy the show! Or grab a snack and a hot drink from Café 22 and settle down next door in Champs Bar where Social Committee will be screening back-to-back episodes of Rick and Morty!

If you’re a mature student, Friday is the day for you! From 4pm til 7pm the QMU will be hosting a wine and cheese mixer exclusively for mature students, the perfect chance to meet new people in a more sophisticated setting. But if you’re looking for something a bit more quirky, our Friday Union Quiz (otherwise known as FUQ) will be taking place in Jim’s Bar from 5pm! This is the perfect opportunity to bond with your new flatmates, whilst also testing your music, film & sci-fi knowledge! Plus there’s a £100 prize, so this one’s not to be missed!

Hopefully this has given you an idea of what’s on during the week that doesn’t involve loud music, alcohol and late nights. Freshers’ Week isn’t for everyone, so don’t feel bad if it isn’t “the best week of your life”. You might not meet your BFF on the very first night, or find a society you want to dedicate your time to immediately. But, as this list has shown, there is something going on to fit everyone’s tastes – the best thing you can do is come to campus, try new things, and meet new people!
