Meet the Team: Žad Novak and Katie Athwal

Žad Novak, 2nd year German and Comparative Literature, News Co-editor
Katie Athwal, 2nd year Sociology and Comparative Literature, News Co-editor

Who are you?

Katie: I am Katie A!
Žad: A control freak fascinated by bohemians. What is you role on the team? What do you do?
K: We’re the first co-news team, because we wanted to provide readers with a wider range of news and opinion-based articles that aren’t quite features, but still more than simply news. I focus on wider issues that are more political and UK/Scotland specific, whilst Žad concentrates on university specific news.
Ž: I am one of the two news editors. I read a bunch of news sources and pick the stories I think are interesting. I also like to look for and cover UofG and QMU related stories.

What is your favourite thing about Glasgow?
K: I’ve lived near Glasgow my whole life so the city was very much home to me, even before I came to uni. I just moved properly two months ago and, since then, my love for the city has only deepened. My favourite spots include Chaiwallah, the top of Kelvingrove Park, Central Gurdwara, Queen’s Park, Kelvin Walkway under Queen Maragret Drive Bridge, and the GoMA.
Ž: Glasgow Film Theatre, and the parks. Especially when the dogs are out.

How did you get involved with [qmunicate]?
K: In typical millennial fashion, I got involved because I had mutual Twitter friends with some of the editors and contributors! I wanted to get to know them and make pals. Obviously I wanted to get involved with student journalism to get back into writing outside of class, but a great deal of motivation was to find like-minded friends, especially as I was a commuting student in first year!
Ž: I came for one meeting during Freshers’ and stayed ever since.

What is your advice to someone wanting to get involved?
K: Just come along to the meetings! Don’t be afraid to speak up or speak your mind if something we’re discussing interests you, and to be honest, follow us on Twitter and respond to us. When I started, I thought the editing team were soooo intimidating – now I’m part of it, we’re really just figuring it out as we go along, and are good pals who like to put together a cool magazine!
Ž: Don’t be afraid to raise your hand. If you have an idea, pitch it to us!

What has been your favourite qmunicut?
K: Trump vs Cheeseburger Instagram.
Ž: ‘Latest Disney release Moana has had to be retitled in Italy, where the name is synonymous with a famous porn star. Moana Pozzi is a household name due to what must be an incredible number of video rental mix-ups. #careergoals.’

Why write News?
K: Write news, because the truth MUST BE REVEALED in this time of FAKE NEWS. Also, it’s good to have an outlet when the Tories do… anything.
Ž: Reality is more creative than any fiction. Plus, it is really important to keep up, especially with stories important to students, which don’t always hit headlines and can remain unread.
