Barenaked Ladies @ Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 16th of March 2022

Truth be told, I had no idea what to expect when I agreed to cover this show. I knew a few songs by the  Barenaked Ladies but, given their decades-long career, that amounted to knowing precious little of their  output. Luckily, any doubts I may have initially had where very, very quickly dispelled.

Opening for the band was English comedian Boothby Graffoe, who offered up his signature mix of  musical talent and excellent wit, eliciting laughter from the crowd effortlessly with near enough every  sentence uttered. This comedic tone also invited audience participation (putting it lightly) which the  artist handled beautifully. By the end of his set – which included songs about robbing the neighbours’

attic and an unfortunate incident involving a poor English monkey meeting his end – I had become an  avid fan, and if anyone takes issue with that, I’ll simply respond with a quote from the artist himself: “there’s fuck all you can do.”

After such a fantastic opening act, many bands would’ve found it hard not to appear overshadowed, but  luckily this was not to be case for BNL. Featuring a healthy mix of songs from their newest album  Detour De Force as well as plenty of well-loved classics, their set truly had something for everyone:  from the most devoted fan to those who only knew them from The Big Bang Theory, everyone was  catered to. This was, of course, in no small part due to the group’s more surprising antics, which included (but was not limited to) a guitar-playing bra, the live debut of duos Gum & Butts and Litter & Dog  Waste, an appearance from famous Greek mathematician Diarrheas. Rounding off the evening’s show,  the group still had a few surprises up their sleeves, offering covers of both ‘Whip It’ by Devo, and  ‘Whole Lotta Love’ by Led Zeppelin. Summing up, while that one ‘chickity China’ lyric from ‘One  Week’ may have failed the test of time, the group still ended the night with a million laughs, claps, and  cheers, if not dollars.
